Abstract

This article discusses the history of the exarchs who served in Georgia in the 80s and 90s of the 19th century and
the early twenty years of the 20th century. It also speaks about their stance on the Church of Georgia and, in general, on the Georgian people. The study is based on the memoirs of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Saint Kalistrate Tsintsadze.
Saint Kalistrate gives a thorough analysis of every detail that displays the character of the exarchs and their attitude to-
wards Georgia.

Based on the memoirs of Saint Kalistrate Tsintsadze, the ar- ticle highlights that the activities of the exarchs were mostly
anti-Georgian by their nature. Special attention is focused on their precision in striving against the supporters of the resto- ration of the historical autocephaly of the Church of Georgia and on their attempts to compel Georgian society to forget
that issue altogether. However, among them were those whom the Georgian people remember in a positive way.
